Born in Glasgow in 1948, John has a deep connection with Loch Lomond going back to adolescent days spent exploring Loch Lomond in homemade canoes and then as a university student and member of Glasgow Schools Sailing Club, helping to introduce other Glasgow youngsters to the delights of the loch and its many islands.
A degree in Geology and Geography at Glasgow University was followed by a career in secondary education including a short spell teaching sailing at Glasgow’s Blairvadach Sailing centre on the Gareloch. John holds the SMLTB summer certificate in Mountain Leadership and is a qualified RYA ‘Coastal Skipper’. John retired from his post as Principal Teacher of Guidance at Hermitage Academy in 2003.
Living in Helensburgh where he helps wife Anne operate Balmillig B&B and Loch Lomond Guides, John has long been heavily involved in local tourism, serving as Chair of Lomond and Clyde Tourist Association for many years. He has served on the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park’s Local Access Forum and is still nominally chair of the equivalent body for Argyll and Bute where he assisted in the establishment of Argyll Coast and Countryside Trust, becoming a founding trustee of that organisation. He has served as Vice Chair and Acting Chairman of the tourism destination organisation, “Love Loch Lomond”. He is presently Convener of Helensburgh and District Access Trust. Joining the board of The Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs in 2001, he has served as their Vice Chair since 2016.
